Employment Law Update April 2017

SOME IMPORTANT CHANGES AFFECTING THE WORKPLACE WITH EFFECT FROM 6 April 2017:-

The compensation limits for Employment Tribunal Claims increase:-

• From £479.00 to £489.00 for the maximum amount of a week’s pay (for redundancy payments and unfair dismissal basic award calculations).

• From £78,962.00 to £80,541.00 for the maximum unfair dismissal compensatory award.

• From £14,370 to £14,670.00 for the maximum basic award for unfair dismissal.

The above changes take effect where the “appropriate date” is on or after 6 April 2017. 

Statutory Sick Pay increases from £88.45 to £89.35.

Statutory Maternity Pay, Statutory Paternity Pay, Statutory Adoption Pay and Statutory Shared Parental Pay increase from £139.58 to £140.98.

Gender Pay Gap Reporting: Employers with at least 250 employees are required to publish four measures of information to show whether there is a difference between the average pay of their male and female employees.  This gender pay gap information should be based on a “snapshot” of information taken on 5 April of each year.  The information should be published on the employer’s website and a government designated website.  

Failure to comply, could lead to enforcement action by the Equality and Human Rights Commission.  (Equality Act 2010 (Gender Pay Gap Information) Regulations 2017.

ACAS has advised that all employers should consider publishing a gender pay report. We recommend that employers with less than 250 employees at least familiarise themselves with these obligations.
